The Ark Kitchen
When the Ark city of refuge church was started in Cape Town in June 1992, our kitchen started out with a primus stove and a pot, and faith that the Lord would supply the necessary ingredients in order to feed the people that come to the Ark for assistance. As the number of mouths to feed increased, large stoves, pots and other utensils were supplied to meet the needs. The kitchen also prepares special meals for functions including bible school graduation, women’s day, homeless world cup soccer and Christmas day .
We now have 2 140 litre oil pots, ovens, a deep fryer and even a walk in fridge, recently repaired by Helderberg Refrigeration.
The kitchen staff consists of 2 teams of 8 permanent volunteer staff that includes 2 cooks per team. For the preparation of vegetables (peeling, cutting and washing) other residents (between 15-20 people) help when needed. The kitchen staff begins their day at 5am and often only finishes at 7pm after clean up. Each team works 2 days on and 2 days off.
We prepare approximately 800 meals 3 times per day, 365 days a year which means the kitchen prepares almost 1 million meals per year. From the beginning until now we have relied on prayer and God’s answers to our prayers to make sure that the residents have never missed a meal!
Many organizations, companies and private individuals donate food to the Ark, including : Shoprite/Checkers, Pick n Pay, Woolworths, Bokomo, Grey Marine, Clover, Dairy Connection, Ullman’s Warehouse, Epping Vegetable Market, The private sector, Blue Ribbon, Albany and many more.
The kitchen also provides excess foodstuffs to other non-profit organizations. We support local soup kitchens, crèches, old aged homes and battling households in the community that are living below the bread line.
